APT’s Core Acting Company was established more than 25 years ago and has been essential to the organization’s artistic growth and excellence.
As APT’s Essence Document points out: the Core Company actors are the foundation of APT’s acting company and are fundamental to the organization. They are leaders with significant experience and excellence in their craft. They model continuous growth and learning – traits that are at the heart of APT’s culture. The expertise they have honed over years is beneficial to others, and they are committed to paying it forward and fostering growth in other artists.
At its heart, the Core Acting Company is based in a reciprocal, mutually beneficial relationship that provides stability – for the actor, the theater, and the audience – which, in turn, supports curiosity, growth, and excellence. This is a commitment on both sides to artistic development and to serving the work: the words, the story, the ensemble, the effort, the theater, and the larger APT community.
There is no written contract between APT and the Core Company actors. Rather, it is an agreement based on trust and understanding, a collaboration and conversation between the Artistic Director and each member.
The basic tenets of the agreement are that Core Company members are expected to use the APT Values as guiding principles, model a level of professionalism and leadership that serves the collective work, contribute to a healthy culture, and strive to create an environment of trust which enables the community to thrive.
Core Company members can expect APT to provide reliable employment as long as the member is committed to their work at APT, consult with members on long-term season planning and projects they could be involved in, provide fulfilling and appropriate casting, provide opportunities for artistic growth, and accommodate sabbaticals as possible when requested.
