We hope you're hungry for some delicious food served up with a side of local fun this week. Get to know Savor the River Valley, the River Valley initiative devoted to connecting community members with the local famers and food-producers who call the region home.

Their big Farm and Food Tour is on the horizon, so we chatted with Savor about all the exciting things they have in store for this spring and beyond.

First, share some background on Savor the River Valley!

We are a grass-roots initiative of family farmers, local food processors, food retailers and restaurants (plus some food-loving community members) in the River Valley area who have come together to support each other and to call attention to the interesting, delicious, community-building things going on in our dynamic food network.

We started working together in 2021 and have been gaining momentum ever since.

Tell us about the upcoming Farm & Food Tour event!

We are so excited about our 4th annual Earth Day Farm & Food Tour on Saturday, April 25, from 10 AM to 4 PM.

This free, self-guided tour lets people connect with small family farmers and other local food producers who make wholesome food in ways that care for people, animals, and the environment. It also allows people to taste and observe the differences that makes. On the 12-stop tour, you can:

  • See locally grown grains milled into flour and buy some to take home.
  • Watch milk being turned into cheese and taste the difference between cheeses made from cow, goat and sheep's milk.
  • Walk through a silvopasture or an orchard. Take a wagon ride through a scenic farm and visit a kitchen garden.
  • Sample juices made form aronia berries, honey berries and elderberries and find out why agroforestry is important. You can even enter to win a free overnight stay at Elderflower Retreat at Hillside Pastures.
  • See baby animals and watch wool being spun into year.
  • Buy herb and cool-season vegetable plants, fruit and nut trees and shrubs to grow at home.
  • Eat smash burgers, empanadas, crepes, barbeque, wood-fired pizza, ice cream and so much more.
  • Bask in community, shared memories, live music, food and beverages at the after party!

It’ll be one heck of a memorable day!

Why should members of the APT audience look into Savor the River Valley?

Much is said and written about the rapid loss of family farms in our state, the challenges for small businesses and the resulting decline of rural communities. At Savor, we think the solution includes getting eaters back in touch with farmers. Shorten the supply chains and let family farmers and small local businesses return to being economic engines in our rural communities.

We hope to see you for the Food & Farm tour on April 25…and whenever you visit APT!
