This fall, shake off the cold-weather blahs as Richard Hannay does, with a rousing night at the theater.

Perhaps, like Richard, you’ll be seated near a mysterious icy blonde in a slinky black dress who fires a pistol into the air, charms her way into your flat and alters the course of the British empire. It could happen.

Alfred Hitchcock loved an improbable twist and so does “The 39 Steps,” a fast-paced parody by Patrick Barlow based on Hitchcock’s 1935 movie. American Players Theatre stages Barlow’s comic thriller through Nov. 30 on the indoor Touchstone stage. 

Early sales were so strong the theater added performances. Those shows too have nearly sold out.
