For nearly 50 years, theater lovers have been traveling to rural Spring Green to see Shakespeare and other works on stage Now American Players Theater is getting national recognition for its work. It’s Wednesday, May 20th. This is Wisconsin Today Morning News. Good morning. I’m Courtney Everett.

American Players Theater in Spring Green is receiving a Tony Award. The Committee behind the Honors made the announcement yesterday. American Players will receive the 2026 Regional Theater Tony. It’s a first for a company in Wisconsin. Leaders of the Tony’s say American Players was singled out as a quote, one-of-a-kind institution delivering world-class theater presentations to the Midwest. The company has been performing on two stages in the rural community for nearly 50 years, often focusing on Shakespeare. Sara Young is the managing director at American Players. She said they were ecstatic when they received word of the award.

"It’s gonna be a season long celebration, actually. We haven’t thought about it in too much detail, but I think that we’re just gonna enjoy this all season."

American Players’ season opens June 6th. They’ll receive their Tony the following day in New York City.
