On May 19, Spring Green's American Players Theatre (APT) was announced as the recipient of the 2026 Regional Theatre Tony Award, which recognizes the company's commitment to artistry and ongoing success. APT will receive a $25,000 grant in addition to the distinction.

The Tony Awards are live theater’s highest honor. The 79th awards ceremony airs on Sunday, June 7, at 7 p.m. CDT. The Regional Theatre Award began in 1976 and is based on the recommendation of the American Theatre Critics Association. APT is the first company in Wisconsin to win the title. The recognition falls among the special honors and awards categories and is expected to be presented during a televised pre-show event.

“On behalf of APT, we are honored and overwhelmed to receive the 2026 Regional Theatre Tony Award,” APT’s Artistic Director Brenda DeVita and Managing Director Sara Young said in a press release. “This award is for the whole APT community: the artists, artisans and staff who work so hard to bring stories to life on our Hill, who believe their work is special and that it matters — because it does matter.”
