Most Memorable Wig Designs in Five Acts, with Rebecca A. Scott, Director of Wigs and Makeup

Did you know March 10th is International Wig Day? For the amazing wig artisans at APT, the celebration lasts all year as they prepare, design, create and style the wigs you ultimately see onstage each season. Rebecca A. Scott, APT’s Director of Wigs and Makeup, is celebrating her 20th season at APT this year. We asked her to share her top five memorable wig designs from her time at APT.



Macbeth (2019)

Becky says, “My first Scottish play! Blood, war makeup, more blood, wigs with braids and leather and jewelry, so much DIRT! I got to buy blood by the gallon! Lady Macbeth ‘pulled’ her ‘hair’ out during her mad scene! It was all so gross and I loved every minute of helping create it. At first dress, Jim Devita, the director, asked the whole cast to come out on stage and get into place for their first entrance. I stood next to him and just started crying. Jimmy asked if I was okay, and I just said, ‘Yes. I'm just so happy they all look so bad.’"

Eurydice (2016)

Becky says, “By the time I did this play, I had done the Gluck opera Orphée et Euridice twice, Orphée by Philip Glass, and Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld, so I was very familiar with the story. Making Eurydice, played by Kelsey Brennan, into an alt-punk leading lady was nerve-wracking to say the least, especially for the Touchstone Theatre. I knew I was successful when people were overheard wondering if Kelsey had actually dyed her hair electric red.”

Rough Crossing (2021) 

Becky says, "The 2021 season was tricky because it was our  ‘post-Covid’ season. We were still practicing safe distancing, masking and no socializing all while trying to make theatre and not catch and spread Covid. Kelsey Brennan's wig was originally made for King Lear in 2016 that got cut after the first dress rehearsal.  I managed to convince the director, Bill Brown, that ‘Wouldn't she look dynamite as a blonde? I happen to have the perfect wig for her...’ She walked out on stage on first dress in that seafoam green gown, the gasp I gusped! It was perfection.”

The Barber and The Unnamed Prince (2025) 

Becky says, “This show! Such wonderful storytelling with a devastating end. Figuring out blood effects for any show requires many meetings and a few rehearsals, with water first, then with the blood. We also brought in Jeff Patterson, owner of JP Hair Designs, to consult with David Alan Anderson and Nathan Barlow on the art and practice of barbering. Plus, a Josh Krause wig to look like his own hair that could have hair cut off it every night via theater magic.”

The Liar (2023) 

Becky says, “The show I didn't work on at all beyond buying the hair and giving direction. This show truly showcases the absolute artistic geniuses I work with every day. I like to say that I have the best wig shop in the country and I stand behind that statement. This show was built by and styled by Heidi Mallett, Tricia Stogsdill and Lauren Zidek, and it was gorgeous and funny and perfect. I am stupid lucky to work with these talented and lovely people every summer."
